Certification Overview

The PMI certifications are highly regarded internationally for their comprehensive and critical testing system. The PMP certification of PMI, known as the Project management professional is one of the most prestigious certification exams by PMI. To test the ability and understanding of candidates at dealing and leading organizational projects the PMP exam has been designed. It critically tests the candidates at five different domains of project management subjects. Its comprehensive course and testing criteria is what makes this certification highly desirable in the international market. According to a recent survey, the PMP certification holders earn twice as much as those who are not certified.

Who can do this certification?

The PMP certification is designed to test the understanding of individuals at directing and leading projects. For individuals with experience at handling organizational projects or working under the management department, this certification can prove to be of high value. The PMP certification is recommended to those who desire to enhance their management skills.


There is a long list of benefits of this exam. As stated before, it has an international recognition which allows the certificate holders to have access to internationally open job roles in 180 different countries of the world. They are automatically counted among the list of professional project managers and are provided with a high salary range and endorsements. Their skills make them eligible as trainers and teachers.

Associated exams

There are no associated exams for PMP certification.


To be eligible for the PMP exam, it is important for the candidate to have either of the below mentioned educational experience:

A secondary degree that can be a high school diploma with at least an experience of 5 years in the project management field. Along with 8000 hours experience of directing and leading projects.


A bachelor degree or at least an experience of three to four years in the field with 5000 hours in directing and leading projects with 35 hours of educational experience in project management.

Examination overview

The PMP is a multiple choice pattern computer based exam. To clear the exam it is important to have knowledge regarding the subjects of 5 following domains. Candidates must be able to assess and understand these subjects:

  • Planning project (24% of the exam)
  • For this section of the exam the applicants require the knowledge of following skills and subjects ; management tools, resource planning, techniques elements and purpose of project planning and time WBS techniques and tools, scope uses and types of organization charts, cost and budget techniques.

  • Executing the project (30% of the exam)
  • For this section of the exam the applicants should be able to have the knowhow about the; project management techniques and tools, quality standard techniques, project budgeting techniques and tools, elements of work statement, continuous process of improvement.

  • Controlling and monitoring the project (25% of the exam)
  • For this section of the exam the candidates require to have the knowledge of costs analysis tools, project management plan techniques, project performance techniques, change management plan strategies, and project control limits.

  • Initiating Project (13% of the exam)
  • The candidates for this section should have the skills regarding cost benefit and business case analysis, project selection as per impact and cost, risk identification and elements of project charter and lastly stakeholder identification strategies.

  • Closing the project (8% of the exam)
  • For this section of the exam, the applicants should be able to understand the skills of close out techniques, transition planning strategies statutes and archiving techniques, feedback techniques, , compliance and basic project accounting techniques.

This exam as mentioned above is computer based and is internationally translated into 13 different languages. There will be 200 questions in the exam out of which first 25 will not affect the score. Different pmp boot camps are available for training and practice for the exam.

Validity of certification

The PMP certification remains valid for 3 years. To retain the value of your certification the candidates must apply for a recertification exam. This re certification exam according to the experts will be easier for the candidates to clear after years of experience in the field.
